Not Horrible

Unofficial Fernie Report - 2007/02/08

Craig's Report - February 08, 2007

As feared, yesterday brought no snow and little melting with the result the skiing, at least in this ice fearing klutz’s opinion, was horrible. Courtesy of 5 cm of overnight snow and light snow that continued throughout the day, today was much improved, although generally well shy of what I would call good. Falling temperatures and modest accumulations seemed to set the stage for the dreaded dust on crust situation and while there certainly was some of that, the new snow, while light, was not fluff and did have enough substance to cushion things a bit. Of course it wasn’t nearly enough to hide the harsh reality underneath or keep from being pushed into mounds separated by slick patches, but by the end of the day it seemed possible to ski most off piste mogul runs without serious sphincter strain.  read more »

Afternoon Wisdom

Unofficial Fernie Report - 2007/02/06

Craig's Report - February 06, 2007

The temperature soared on the mountain yesterday and everything became soft to above the top of Bear. After a couple of snowless weeks of skiing firm surfaces of crisp edge worthiness, but Teutonic immovability, my first reaction was the snow seemed irresolute and kind of wussy. However after just a couple of turns, the pleasures of skiing compliant snow returned and with even the South facing slopes once again friendly, a great day was had by all. However it was clear a price would have to be paid if the temperature fell without a generous fresh fall of snow. Sure enough a clear night of sub zero temperatures left the snow in my front yard hard as a rock.  read more »

The Wooden Room on the Way to Baker

Dubs came lurking into my living room this morning in search of illegal identification for a recent immigrant acquisition brought to the project directly from Norway. He obviously hadn’t expected my presence in the next room, and if I hadn’t spoken up sooner I have no doubt in my mind that he would have stolen everything of value in the entire house. Not many people know this about Matty Dubs - he is an incessant kleptomaniac and a fanatical criminal. The first time I ever met the guy he fleeced me for my watch and tried to sell me an 89’ Volkswagen Rabbit with no hood or steering wheel. We have been friends ever since.  read more »
