Hiking at Island Lake Fernie BC - Trail Update

Trail Conditions June 28, 2012

General Information: Trail checks and cleaning is in progress; however early hiking conditions can still be expected with snow on many trails and some fallen trees across trails. There have been numerous wildlife sightings including moose, black bear and grizzly bear.

Rail Trail
Beautiful sights and sounds next to Lizard Creek with good views of the “Three Bears” peaks half way up the trail. Trail is in good condition.

Old Growth Trail
Shady old growth cedars and lush interior rainforest plants make this trail a local favorite. Stay bear aware. Some black bear families have been enjoying the old growth forest. Trail is in good condition.

Lake Trail
There is still a lot of snow on the north aspect side of the trail. The south facing aspect and the trail leading to the beach are clear and open. Come and observe a cow moose with newborn calves swim across the water from the island to the shore. There is also a bull moose hanging around; however please be respectful of wildlife and stay at a safe distance.

Fir Trail
There is still snow on this trail. It also needs to be cleared from trees and branches. Not recommended at this time.

Tamarack Trail
Trail is accessible to the view point. There is snow at the top near the staircase that leads to the viewpoint; however there is blue flagging showing the way through this moraine, gully feature. Keep your eyes open for Glacier Lilies and Calypso Orchids.

Baldy Loop
We have not completed trail checks on this trail yet. There will certainly be significant snow on this trail. Not recommended at this time.

Spineback Trail
We have not completed trail checks on this trail yet. There will certainly be significant snow on this trail. Not recommended at this time.
