1970 Brazil. The country is under a brutal military dictatorship. Pelé has already scored his thousandth soccer goal and is taking Brazil on to win to its third World Cup.

When Mauro’s activist parents go on “vacation,” they leave him with his grandfather and promise to back in time for World Cup. Nervous about who might be following, they do not stick around to find out that the old man has just died, leaving 12-year-old Mauro to his own devices in a strange city.

In São Paulo, Mauro discovers his Jewish ancestry and develops his first crush, but his anxiety about the fate of his parents is kicked up by the World Cup fever all around him. Will his family be reunited in time for the big game?

IFF would like to extend thanks to its sponsors: Vogue Theatre, Blackstone Resorts, City of Fernie, British Columbia Arts Council and Toronto International Film Festival Group.

“Sensitive, delicate and involving, The Year My Parents Went on Vacation is a silky-smooth dramedy about a boy thrust into the alien environment of a Jewish community when his politicized parents are forced to flee the country.
-Deborah Young, VARIETY

“The Year My Parents Went on Vacation is a meticulous, fascinating and tender story of Brazil in 1970 when revolution was in the air and the World Cup was the hope of bringing a country back together.”
