Clay animation is a fussy form of filmmaking, one that requires patience and passion. Five years in the making, Mary and Max is most certainly a labour of love for the Oscar-winning director Adam Elliot of Harvie Krumpet. It tells the story of the young Mary and the middle-aged Max, who form an unlikely bond across generations and continents as pen pals. The animation is superb, characters endearing, humour abundant and the themes of isolation and depression are honestly explored.
