Reminiscent of the styles of Lawren Harris and Ansel Adams combined, Steve Short presents ‘New Works’ from his original photographs of natural, and incredible, North American landscapes. Drawing on over 200 unique images from his collection, Short creates masterpieces of art. These photographic compositions blended with artistic whimsy and a virtual palette knife create a sublime beauty.
Short’s technique takes only his finest photographs and transfers them into digital form either through slide scans or directly from the digital camera. Then, by hand, he uses the colours of the photograph to create a palette for his digital brushes. More detailed than traditional acrylics or watercolours, sometimes there is no evidence of the original photo, in others the ratio of original photo to digital paint can vary.
Steve Short is an author, editor, and photographer who has been capturing the Canadian landscape for more than three decades. As a member of the exclusive Canadian Photo Agency, First Light, his work has been featured in the finest publications throughout the world. These include National Geographic Traveler, Equinox, Backpacker, Beautiful BC Magazine, Rolling Stone, The Globe and Mail, National Post, and the famous Super Natural BC ad campaign. He was also the official photographer for Canada’s contribution to the United Nations International Year of Fresh Water. The following three coffee table books feature Steve as the primary or sole photographer: In the Path of the Explorers, Water and Our Way of Life, and Fernie - A Celebration
of 100 Years.
Born in Ottawa, Steve considers himself fortunate to have the cultural surroundings that the nation’s capital offers young people. As a child he spent Saturday mornings at the National Museum of Natural History as a junior member of Canada’s oldest naturalist club, the McCoun Naturalists. Here he encountered many of the leading natural scientists of the time. School field trips and art classes at the National Art Gallery added the perspectives of Canada’s leading artists to a developing appreciation of artistic interpretation
of natural themes. Although primarily known as a creative photographer, he has now embarked on an artistic adventure beyond photography, combining
his early talents in traditional painting with his skill as a photographer. He calls this new endeavour photo-realistic impressionism.
