you want affordable housing? well you're going to have to fight for it - right now, developers are fighting NOT to have it! remember back in the day when housing was a big issue for residents.... oh thats right, it still is. Council is currently discussing the by-law that would allow the municipality to 'extract' affordable housing from developments. this is one of the key legal actions that a community can use to add to its affordable housing stock and ensure that everyone in the community has an opportunity to buy and live in their own home in their own community. at the last meeting, council were discussing adding to the by-law a statement that would allow developers to not add affordable housing but some other desired amenity. maybe that's not a bad idea. but is any other community doing it this way??... i dont think so. and what would stop developers from simply saying that they plan to build or develop an 'amenity' as an alternative to affordable housing, when they had planned to build it to improve the desirability of their product anyway...??? ummm..... nothing! these discussion currently going on are crunchtime. whilst by-laws can be reviewed and changed at a later day, wouldnt it be great that we get this right from the start. and we do it with enough balls and oumph that it actually makes a difference immediately. anyone who has or is struggling to find affordable accomodation either to buy or to rent should be having their say at these meetings. this is it. this is when the future of Fernie is being decided. at committee of the whole meetings and at regular council meetings - RIGHT NOW!! i know we all get tired of having to fight for what we believe in but it will be worth it in the end. and what does it take for all of us who this affects (which is, by the way, all of us, whether we have figured that out yet or not), to write a letter to the editor, talk to a reporter, go to a council meeting and stand up and say - Fernie residents deserve good clean safe affordable housing. |

sounds like council is pulling some pretty boneheaded moves lately...
wtf.. who wants to live in a monoculture town, with just stinking rich albertans, with there stupidly large suv's, comming down on weekends, (every once in awhile), these people do not add much to the town, i thought the council was supposed to look after the best interests of the town, and its people?
i cant wait to see the city council meeting about the raging elk,
the favouritism that goes on in this town is ridiculous, pittifull, and ridiculous

Hey guys, have you actually attended the committee of the whole meetings that discussed the bylaw? The part about other amenities in lieu was pretty much shot down. It must be remembered that to qualify for affordable housing a person will have to meet resident and employment criteria. This program will not be for those who have a part time job and ski and bike 100+ days per year. On the Revelstoke note, they actually have housing that on average is more than it is here.
