My family and I are moving to Fernie sometime in the spring and I have some questions. ...

We will need to find work and I want the local opinion, is it better to find a job then move or is it better to move, rent a place, then find a job.

I have appplied for a few local jobs but don't get a response, could it be the Alberta address?

Before I get any responses from people who have a general hate for Albertans I want to point out that we are choosing to permanently relocate to Fernie for the following reasons:

1. It has a wonderful community atmosphere.
2. The people are amazing, welcoming and friendly.
3. I believe that my children will be safe there.
4. People care about each other in Fernie.
5. There are no drive by shootings or daily stabbings.

Opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks
L

I would try to find a job first. There isn't much here and you have to be pretty creative to get by. I work 3 or 4 different jobs just to get by.

Good luck and we look forward to saying hi to you on the street in Fernie!

L. Fernie is an excellent choice to bring up a family. When I first came, I found that you had to get around and network a bit first to find a job. If you proved to be diligent, hard working and reliable, all sorts of opportunities present themselves. It does depend on your skill set as well as an ability to take almost anything at first, as that first job creates opportunities that can be taken advantage of. My advice would be to come with enough to live for at least a few months and be adaptable.

Good luck

Thanks ryland and buzz.

We have family that are local and they plan to help with the connections. We also decided to leave our careers, I have a B. Ed, owned my own successfull small business and have HRM training and my husband is a horticulturalist. We understand that we will hove to step outside of our comfort zones and be creative for a better family life.

I am afraid of the idea of working four jobs to get by... when is there time for family life?

With a husband as a horticulturalist, you could buy the Fernie Garden Centre (I think it's still for sale on PropertyGuys.com??) and buy yourselves careers!

Good luck with your move.

Horticulture is probably the top paying profession in Fernie. Don't act like its not lol

Sawmills and Coal Mines. Or 4 jobs. Either way Fernie is worth it.

Oh and make #1 on your list of things to do "Register vehicle in BC". As dumb as it is, I really do recommend doing that.

If you wanna move to a better place yet move to jaffray, half way inbetween both cranbrook for shopping and fernie for skiing. I know Canadian Pacific Railway is hiring, great money and great job.

...not knocking Jaffray, but can't imagine moving somewhere that would involve getting in your car for absolutely everything. I've lived in some remote locations, but they've all had a smaller central community. I've yet to see a single person walking or biking anywhere in Jaffray in all the times I've passed through. I guess if you like big fields and the inside of your vehicle though...
