So apparently we have a new free public campground next to Tim Hortons. Counted 13 Albertan trailers, RV's and boats there tonight, one of them who's been there for a week now. I'm sure many more to come on Friday. Amazing...come one come all, close to all amenities and restaurants, right next to a lake and river. And when you're done, just dump your sewage out on the ground and leave your garbage. Best part?....IT"S FREE!!! Lord Jesus, what's next? And are the RCMP and City Bylaw dept. not aware of this? The gall of people amazes me, but never surprises me, but this is ridiculous. |

there is a bunch of RV resorts up coal creek and an entire village up corbin creek too.
you'd think there would be some entrepreneurs in this town opening up a proper RV park and some more camping spaces.
there are what, 40 camp sites at the mount fernie provincial park and a dozen or so RV lots at Snow Valley Motel.. maybe a few more out at snowy peaks in hosmer.....
no wonder people are just setting up in parking lots and outside of town on backroads. there is nowhere for them to go!

I can see squatter camping out of town or out on forestry roads, but right in a shopping plaza? Beyond ridiculous. Imagine if you tried doing that in Kelowna or Calgary? Your ass would be booted out of there in 5 minutes, and the same should happen here. You just know those clowns are going to leave a huge mess. Look what they do out at Koocanusa.

Parking lot camping is a growing trend especially at walmarts. Large numbers of people are doing this in every city and town. It seems nutty to me, but each to their own.

I wonder how many vehicles are there as an opportunity to rest, perhaps catch a few zzz's. Big open space next to Tim's, etc. right off the highway, seems reasonable to assume some drivers are using the space for that. Am saying that merely as a hypothesis, resting as opposed to 'camping.' As far as some big box stores chains, like wal-mart, I could be mistaken, but they support the use of their space by those individuals seeking places to rest. Whatever their reasons are for this policy, if it is accurate and I am sure we all know why they might do this, I am sure most would agree .... good on them.

whom ever started connecting the term rv with camping ought to be tied to a tree in the flathead with honey on their lips.
camping is with one of those things called a tent (see guides hut) and sleeping bags.
then again, "camping" in a walmart or canadian tire parking lot may be as close as they can approach nature without a shaking fear.

I know that some people use it as a rest stop, and fair enough, not an issue. But I also know that most of them are in effect camping. I doubt that it's allowed by municipal bylaws however, whether it's privately owned or not. Otherwise you'd have hundreds of people living there rent free, hell I'd move there if that was the case. And you just know that left unchecked, within a few weekends, that place will be packed with campers.

I was shocked by the number of RVs down there last night, all of whom seemed to be setup for the night. I don't really see a problem with it - the ugly, scruffy, weedy gravel pit (plaza is a bit of a stretch- it's not exactly the St Louis Gateway Arch) might as well get used for something if the landowner doesn't mind.
I do object to the garbage though, however it's not just from the RVs, it's there pretty much year round. The sewage will follow too- not sure if any will dump black water but I'm sure they will dump the rest.
In terms of RV Parks in town, we are sadly lacking. Snow Valley and the Prov. Park are booked solid at this time of year. Yes, there's Snowy Peaks (also packed full) and the new sites at Trit Trot Farms. With the huge increase in summer traffic over the past few years a Municipal Park is very much needed- I can't see a private landowner allocating a space worth $600K and building $250K's worth of services and facilities to RV sites that will pull in about $500 a night for two month of the year and maybe $50 a night for the other 10 months. In terms of generating growth and business for Fernie though, this is something we would all benefit from.

Well I think someone should tell those dirty tourists to get the hell out of your town and take their money with them.
Most can't find a campsight, need a place to safely rest, etc...so they pick a safe, open, non residential spot...what a bunch of dirtbags! Tell them to piss off and not to come back until they have cash to spend on a second house! Then they can park the RV in thier own driveway. Or let them know that other BC towns are a much better option to spend money in.
