Coal Creek Mine Disaster

I admit I have lived here for over 8 years and the history of Coal Creek alluded me until recently. I knew there used to be a mine and that there had been a disaster but what I didn't know is that it was the biggest mining disaster in BC's history and most importantly there has never been a memorial. There was a service held at the 50 year anniversary but never a memorial created to honor the 128 or so people who died. I looked under fernie.com's history link and even in the article about the year of the coal miner which was 2003-2004 there was no mention of the disaster, I would have thought that the year of the Coal Miner might have been a time to commemorate and honor those who died at Coal Creek in 1902 and other mine disasters. I just think it is a part of history that shouldn't have been forgotten.

Speaking of mine disasters at coal creek.

Below is the outline of the new proposed underground mine at coal creek.. Exploration is starting this spring.

The red outline is the area that kennecott/rio tinto has already been granted rights to by the bc government, and the orange outline is what they have applied for and hope to obtain:
