for real? care to share some details? I donate and will be hugely offended if the food is going to people that need to make their sled payments.

I do not work at the mine, but from what I hear alot of the young employees are voting to get back to work, unfortunately it's not in the majority. I do however feel bad for these families. I think it is important for a community to have compassion and empathy for anybody in any given situation, as I am sure this is how you would want to be treated....seems pretty simple.

Gavin, that is a bit of a generalization to assume that all of the miners, or the ones at the food banks are making payments on their sleds, big trucks, etc. It is a generalization to assume that miners live that lifestyle. Granted quite a few do, but what about the ones who are raising families and are really struggling to make ends meet right now? Who are we to judge who uses the food bank and why make them feel even worse than what they probably already do?

I do not work at the mine and I donate regularly to the food bank, the Salvation Army, etc. I have no problems with anyone using that resource if they really need it to get by. That's what it's there for. Again, who are we to judge? Have a little compassion folks!

Yeah, no kidding, this is a ridiculous thing to bring up. The membership of the union was simply advised that if necessary, help was available at the food bank. I have not heard of a single instance of any member actually doing so. But if someone was so badly off that they had to, who are you to demean them? The last time there was a strike, some 20 years ago, the union made up food hampers themselves, but of course there were problems of things not being picked up in time, or not at all, and things going to waste. So now, it is dealt with from a centralized station. And for your information, the union gives generously to the food bank every year, and if there were a sudden depletion in their inventory due to this strike, of course it would be made up for. Every striking miner I have ever brought this up with has said the same thing: "There are people worse off than me and I would only do that as an absolute last resort". Pick something else to bitch about.

It's those 4-6k a month jobs, that pay the MSP's of the rest of us. It's those incomes that pay high taxes for us to spend on social programs. It's those incomes that build arenas and swimming pools. It's those incomes that pave the roads we drive on.
