This is a reprint of a recent online review of the Curry Bowl. I don't know the author, I'm just posting it here for others to read.
Item: The Curry Bowl in Fernie, BC
Location: 931-7th Avenue, Fernie, BC, Canada
by Jessie Bahrey
From the exterior, The Curry Bowl in Fernie, BC, looks absolutely nothing like an Asian restaurant at all, or like any restaurant at all, for that matter. It is actually a small house on a main road in Fernie, in the shadow of the gorgeous Rocky Mountains. In fact, the only way that one can tell that this is a restaurant and not someone’s residence is the small sign on the second floor window, and the menu on the door. The menu on the door claims that The Curry Bowl is ‘Enlightened Asian Cuisine” with food from Thailand, India and Japanese. As those styles of food are some of my favourites, and I was hungry after a day of hiking and fishing in the mountains around this picturesque town, we decided to see if we could get in without a reservation.
As spring is the off-season in Fernie and other mountain resort towns, we were lucky enough not to need a reservation. The interior of this restaurant is quite small, what you would expect from a small house, with peach coloured walls, wood beams, stone accents, tile floor, and very little décor except for a few plants.
We were seated quickly, by a woman who looked more like a grandmother than a server or hostess, and I was very curious to look at this menu, as I figured it would be curries, stir-fries and perhaps some teriyaki
and noodle bowls. The first thing I noticed was the huge selection of sakes and Asian beers, as well as many types of tea, which is quite a unique feature considering most restaurants are eager to show off their wine lists. When I took a look at the dinner menu, I almost fainted; nothing is over $10! That is almost unheard of these days. The menu is simply divided into starters, hot noodle dishes, cold noodle dishes, and desserts. There are Indian, Thai and Japanese style entrées, and then they are further divided into the type of noodle used-soba, udon or men, and the menu describes each of these types of noodle. There really was nothing on the menu that I did not want to try, but I finally decided on Ja Ja Udon, and my husband ordered Curried Udon, each for $8.85, and we shared a dish of Gyoza to start, for $5. The food came very quickly, and it was certainly the best Gyoza I have ever had, with an amazing dipping sauce. Our main course also arrived promptly, and the size of these hot noodle bowls was very large, which makes the low price an even better deal. My Ja Ja Udon had vegetables, shitake mushrooms and chicken with a miso and soy sauce, and my husband’s Curried Udon was a Japanese style curry noodle dish. Both were wonderful, very spicy and satisfying. The meal was so filling that we were unable to try a dessert, but that will be on my list of things to do the next time I visit Fernie. For the extremely low price, almost as low as a fast food restaurant, The Curry Bowl is as good an Asian restaurant as I have ever been to, and better than most. For real Asian flavours, this restaurant should not be missed.
