Crossing the highway this afternoon, I was passed by the "City of Fernie Loonie Bus" complete with big red sign in the window. Was this intentional? An oversight? To any Canuks that don't get the joke - The Loonie bin in many english speaking countries (obviously not this one though!) is the (very politically incorrect) term for the place where the mentally incapacitated reside. The loonie bus is what picks you up and takes you there - a recurring threat from parents of children who behave in an odd manner in an attempt to get said kids to stop embarrasing said parents - ie "if you don't stop that behaviour, the men in white coats will come and take you away in the loonie bus!" |

I don't think its an issue. In other countries "loonie" might mean other things. In Canada it refers to one dollar. And "bus" refers to...well, a bus. As soon as I read the subject of this post I thought "A bus that costs a dollar." And as long as our Loonie Bus is in our Loonie spending country its all good.

I love the idea of the Loonie bus going around Fernie. It's worth a snigger every time you see the sign.
"Come here, Norman. Hurry up. The loons! The loons!"*

Loonie or loonie who cares if it gets you to the ski area?
For a Loonie, I'll be a loonie and take the ride. I happen to be rather secure in my mental state and can take the derision of those who are not.

To be clear on this, I think a loonie is an awesome deal for this bus. To be shuttled between the ski hill and downtown for only $1 is a total bargain - I wish some of those people hitching would support it instead of just wangling free rides.
Yeah, I drive a van and often it's just me in it in the morning, but if you want a ride, support the Loonie Bus or buy your own frickin' car!
The number of people who get in at the end of the day when I'm feeling generous and say "Hey, thanks man, I live in Ridgemont" is getting insane. More insane is there huffing when I say I'll only take them as far as Park Place Lodge. The other day I even had people wanting to be dropped off right outside Scapegoat because they "needed" pizza. I'm not a taxi service.
Support the Loonie bus!

I read lots of comments about the Loonie Bus but I cannot find a route schedule or a link to one any where on the our fernie site. A friend found the schedule on the ski hill web page: www.skifernie.com/getting-here.aspx

alba, we also refer to the loonie bus as you described, and I have lived in Canada my whole life. I think it is a great name for the service.

Double meanings are twice as efficient.
