So in a day and age that everyone seems to be trying to go green, reduce there emissions, and general use of fossil fuels it seems like FERNIE ALPINE RESORT is doing the OPPOSITE. Most ski hills are switching from conventional forms of electricity, to more friendly ways, wind and solar, while all this is taking place FERNIE ALPINE RESORT flys in thousands and thousands of liters of diesel to operate a chairlift. I am aware that RCR is backed by a major oil company, probably meaning Alberta Diesel, is cheaper then B>C Hydro, but still come on.. Does any one else think that it is a shame for a ski hill to operate a diesel lift (never mind 2) these days. I hope this fact gets known, there is no need to burn 10,000+ liters of diesel a winter to create electricity anymore. |

You should really be Thanking F.A.R
new chair and every thing they are doing for Fernie,
why do you not just sell your car and cut your clothing down by about 70% and grow your own food you silly snaper head
I am more then happy to ride at diesel pro hill.....
you should attack all the new super homes going up in town or some thing

It's run by a diesel ac generator running an electric motor instead of a diesel engine like Haulback or like the Elk used to be, so it won't burn what you think it would. I agree it's not exactly green, but neither is the electricity coming to our houses or the other lifts...And sadly the snowcats grooming will burn much much more than both of them combined

You all still don't get it, the new lift is for bombing purposes
only. The whole new public lift thing is a scam. there is a slight chance it may open to patrons once in a while or if you have paid extra bucks for the ride.
Excuses could be: Wind
: Visibility
: Avy control
These three alone will keep it closed for most of the winter, that is of course if it is ready this winter.
I hope I am wrong on all counts, but.

A few years ago there was a photo op with FAR and biodiesel. Are they using biodiesel? Many other resorts have started using biodiesel blends in their grooming fleets.
How about installing a wind turbine on the top of polar peak. Would be cool if the peak chair could be powered by it's own wind turbine!

I do agree with you on both your points here. There is a even a local company that produces bio-desal.
As for wind power, that would be a even better idea. Lost Boys Pass probably provides a better location. With the "Out of sight" possibility, easy access for instillation, maintenance and infrastructure. I am sure it would not be hard to produce enough electricity to power the lifts, and resort in general.
Will this happen, probably not, but it s still fun to think about.

Would be nice to see RCR step it up and do some more progressive things on the environment. But i'm not holding out much hope seeing as though it is owned by one of Canada's largest oil sands companies.

Yeah right!!!!......oh boy now you guys are really getting carried away. Wind powered?? Yes, let's set up a few of those gigantic windmills like they have out by Lethbridge. That wouldn't cost much. Then maybe you could have a big solar powered fan to produce enough wind to turn the blades on the thing.

Other resorts are doing it.

One wouldn't power the entire ski area. But many might be able to.. Or maybe there isn't enough wind on top of the ski hill here.. You don't know till you study it.
There was a proposal for wind turbines on the same ridge that heavens gate wants to put the gondola to. Maybe they could work with the wind power company to power their ski area with wind power!

Before we jump up and down about wind power watch the movie Windfall.
