fave movies?

I am gearing up to open a new movie rental shop downtown.

I already have a number of cinephile friends who have said things like, "You need to carry the Star Wars trilogy!" "Get together a selection of classic '80s flicks!" "Have all the old Westerns!"

What are some of your thoughts? What are some of your all-time favourite movies? What about those classic kids movies you want to show your own kids - Benji? Watership Down? What are some of the old TV shows you'd love to see again - The 6-Million Dollar Man? The Bionic Woman? The Flintstones?

Free rentals to those with wicked suggestions.

Thanks for your time, and I am looking forward to seeing you in the future home of Midge's Mags.

You're a brave soul to try a business like that in this day and age of downloading. Kind of like opening a CD store. Best of luck to you.

I think it's going to be a great addition to Fernie. Are you going to stock magazine's too Midge?

My all-time fav movie... Sound of Music. A must have! (yes I am cheesy, don't laugh)

I feel like Star Wars and all the big 80's movies are on cable every week but there are quite a lot of people in Fernie who don't have cable and would probably go for those.

I don't have the option to download movies and there's a couple that I haven't seen in ages and would love to watch again for sentimental reasons:

Short Cuts
Young Einstein
'St Trinians' movies from the 50's and 60's

I thought there was already a dvd rental place off the highway (never been in there though...sorry if that discourages you!)
I'd stay away from all the latest movies, as many people do download these as said above. Possibly concentrate on more obscure movies?

Some of the more successful places in London operate a very good rental service by being very knowledgeable and open to offering recommendations, and ordering films on the shelves by director etc to help encourage people to branch out from the film they came in for.

Having some ski/board etc vids is good, as is the cafe/bar add on, perhaps you could also pick up a cheap projector and do a film club thing open to all members once a week to introduce people to directors they may not have heard of, maybe sell some snacks and drinks at it too and show em outdoors in the summer.

Am not a local, but there's my ideas anyhow!

I used to go to a video store like that in Vancouver, it was amazing...most I've ever rented in my life. They did the director thing, and they had crazy categories like 'bloodfest' and 'snuggles' and 'Saturday morning.'

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone! Keep them coming!

I am hoping to be a little different, knowledgeable and more user friendly than the outlet on the highway... and from what's on offer for free online.

Plans are being hatched for in-store movie nights and clubs, Oscar galas and guest speakers.

cheers!

Bottom line, new hollywood releases are your bread and butter. If you have the budget to stock some of the stuff being suggested that is great. There is a market for that, but it is small. Remember this is a small town with a small population, and an even smaller population who will rent eclectic movies, no matter how good they are. A forum such as this may give a false indication of that market. Be careful. Aside from that your ideas for being more user friendly etc as you describe could give you a leg up.
Good luck. With the attitude you show, I think you could make it work.

Instead of offering a traditional DVD rental service, why not provide a DVD download and burn service. Many people aren't able to download movies/TV shows because they don't have a fast enough internet connection, a decent PC, or just don't know how to burn a DVD. So why not offer that service? Set up a few computer terminals in-store and let people browse movie sites like http://iwatchfilm.com/ or http://cinemanow.com When they find what they want, you let them purchase it and then burn their DVD for them. You don't need to carry an inventory of obscure titles because the DVDs are made to order.
