You may have heard the good news that the BC government has not allowed BP to drill for coalbed methane in the Flathead watershed. But what you may not know is that the BC government has initiated the 60 day tenure referral process for the rest of BP's Mist Mountain project, still at over 400 sq.km.

TONIGHT at 7PM (Monday, February 25, 2008) Fernie City Council will be reviewing the BP Tenure application.

If you are concerned about this project it is imperative that you come to tonight's meeting and let our local representatives know how you feel. If you don't show up and voice your opposition, they may believe that their is no opposition and recommend that the project go forward.

If you cannot make it to this meeting, please continue to take action!

You wrote letters to your representatives and they listened, now let them know that if coalbed methane doesn't belong in the Flathead wathershed, it doesn't belong in the Elk watershed either. Write another letter, make another phone call, or send another e-mail from www.cccbm.org today.

the outcome of nearly 50 people showing up at the council meeting was as follows:

----
The City of Fernie received a request for comment from the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources on a proposal by BP Canada Energy Company and Elk Valley Coal Partnership to obtain petroleum and natural gas rights for the exploration of coalbed gas in the Crowsnest Coalfield. If approved by the Province, the tenure agreement would give BP the exclusive right for a set period of time, to apply for permission to drill wells within the agreement area which does not include the area known as the Dominion Coal Block or any area within the Flathead watershed.

Prior to providing comment on the proposal to the Province, Council will establish a consultation strategy and advertise dates to consult with the community in an open meeting on the issue. BP Canada, representatives from the Provincial Government and several other organizations will also be invited to attend and participate in the public consultation process. Details on the planned consultation are expected to be confirmed by Council within the next two weeks.
