I just wanted to think the a**hole who tried to steal our car the other night. You really helped solidify my desire to get the heck out of this town. I'm not sure what you gained my stealing my ID for work, but I really hope Karma comes back to bite you soon. Good riddence Fernie. I was going to come back and get the last of my stuff, but maybe it's not worth it.

Sorry this happened to you, but not all of us are "a**holes". I'm willing to bet the thief isn't a local. I too have had stuff stolen from me and it's not a nice feeling. Best of luck.

Dont judge Fernie by one event. I was on night shift in Coal Mtn with my van parked at the Esso in Sparwood. After work I returned to it to find the window smashed, steering column smashed, new ignition mangled. Two other vehicles also had smashed side windows and there paint keyed and everything rummaged through. The police didnt do a thing. So Fernie isnt as Bad as you think.

According to the cops, Fernie has way higher rates of vehicle vandalism and break-in's than most other BC interior towns, so it is hard for me not to continue to judge. By leaving Fernie, I was also able to buy a house 2x the size, and about 90 years newer for the same price as our Fernie house. Not to mention a job that pays me twice as much as I could ever make near Fernie, 2 more months of warmer weather, and a ski hill still only a few km away that is actually affordable. It is sad, but there isn't too much that will be missed about that place by me. Cheers to those of you who love it, just start keeping your cars in a garage if you can.

You bet the thief wasn't a local? Well, go figure. The only people that have ever stolen stuff from me have been locals. Local kids broke into my car, some born and raised local stole from me and all my co-workers at work. So to go and assume that it wasn't a local is just ignorant.
Oh and the comment about Australia may have been just as ignorant. Well done.

There are definitely down sides to this town, and way too many rude people! It sure doesn't live up to other small town's friendliness and acceptance, with the whole snobby mentality of 'locals'.

Well, there is a chance that its just you. And no matter what town you go to..... the "snobby locals" won't accept you because of your personality...

And if that is the case, then moving to a new town, really won't help that much....

I guess I should've said the snobby mentality of whether or not you're a considered local. So many times I've been asked where I'm from, how long I've been here, only to get the reply, "Well, I'VE been here for 25 years!!! So YOU'RE not a local!!". You can only hear that so many times before you feel like they just all think they're better than you, for no reason, except that yes, they can ski more and better than you! Anyone who contributes to this town and lives here full time has every right to be 'a local'.

Agree 100%. I have been here over twenty years. When I meet someone who is new to town and has the intent to make this place their home I consider them local. They are living locally so they are local, period. All the rest is just BS.
