Fernie Chamber of Commerce is looking for a new idea.
We are needing to replace the old and dangerous oil rig sitting out front of the Info Centre.
We are looking for something that represents Fernie.
Other than the Coal Mines.
Any ideas on a picture! Statue! something that depict represents Fernie' past and present and future.
Please forward your ideas to sandrasmall@fernie.com or call me at 423-4619

We could have the World's Largest GRIZ!

There is quite a bit of history to the oil rig so I am not sure why we need to dismantle rather than reinforce or strengthen.....I had a tourist suggest that we light it up with lights......perhaps a lit griz....might be a good compromise, I don't think we should remove it, it has quite a bit of character and who said it was dangerous?? Might just be a convenient conclusion.

i think we could over haul that thing and make a wicked monument to Fernie, have a skier coming down one side , hiker going up one side , kayaker down one side, and a big mountain biker going up , and a massive griz on the top, this could look wicked and be a great welcome mat to Fernie, very eye catching and people would stop for pics and info ...........this is very doable....i have the contacts

As much as I detest the oil derrick... looks like the City of Fernie (who has ultimate say) has decided that saving the derrick is of the upmost importance.
Although the City has yet to issue a clear statement as to whether they are for or against removal, I belive they have sent a very clear message last week. They have formed a committee with 2 Councillors to look for funds to save and restore the derrick.
