Ya know, I'm getting a bit bored of dodging people in ski boots who slip and nearly fall in front of my van when they're hiking up the ski hill road to get to the base area. I really don't want to do anyone any harm. Can't RCR build some safe trails to escort people from the accommodations of FAR to the base area? Anyway, my buddies who normally come to Fernie decided to go to Austria this year. They think Fernie's snow is awesome and the conditions have usually been great, but they said they got fed up of the poor facilities and the final straw was the closing of The Wood which meant, so far as they're concerned, the only non-hotel places to eat on the hill are the horrendous Daylodge and the icky Kelseys. They said they wanted some on-hill facilities that weren't comedy and having had gear wrecked in Fernie they were looking for chairlifts that didn't drip oil on them I suppose. So yeah check this out. This is how they get from the car park and main resort area up to the ski lift base station. Heated, lit, underground tunnels with people movers! Insane, you just stand there and you're escorted safe and sound right to the lifts.
When are we getting them at Fernie? |

No offense Snowboarder, but you make your buddies sound like prima donnas
. Too inconvenient to go into town for a decent dinner... Don't want to mingle with the common folk in the daylodge... And if their idea of good ski area is one that has a heated tunnel with moving sidewalks between the parking lot and lifts then they certainly don't belong in Fernie.
I will agree with you that a separate walking trail would be nice to get people off the narrow roadway.

remember this is supposed to be a resort, not a ski hill. didn't they change the name to make sure everyone knows ?

I beleive the name change was due to confusion with a snow valley in the states somewhere, no?

i believe thats besides the point.somewhere near edmonton has a snow valley, I can see how there would be confusion.

people like smart arse crailface and snoboardr aren't happy unless they got somethin to bitch about.GET OVER YOURSELVES.Fernie ranked #5 in north america...with plenty of room to improve. Soon nay sayers and whiners will run off to some other dream of steep deep and cheap...then the rest of us can get back to enjoying this "resort town" and everything it has to offer.
As far as pedestrians on the hill being at risk? Perhaps if most of these idiots wouldn't walk 3 and 4 people wide, there would be room for everyone hmmmm.......

okaaaay . .. . i still think a paved, lighted at night trail besides the road would be a good idea

hahaha well yeah it *is* inconvenient to go from the ski hill to downtown at lunch, it's a 12km round trip. I have a house downtown and they usually stay here, so dinner ain't the issue - it's what to do on the hill when they want a break.
And they'd be totally cool "mingling with the common folk" if only they could. Even on Wednesday when it was -15ish max on the hill and hardly anyone was up there, I couldn't get a seat in the Slopeside even after the lunch "peak".
I think the point is Fernie is billed overseas as a "world class resort" - to many people on holiday, it's as much about the time not skiing as it is the time skiing. So don't bill the place as a resort when it's not, it's a ski hill. And the town is completely separate. I'm here loads of time out of winter season, I have a house here because I want to immigrate and live here long-term (sorry Steve!), but the folks who are just doing 1-2 weeks a year, they want something a bit more for their cash.
And no my prima donna buddies didn't expect heated lit underground tunnels. I just found them quite amazing considering we're at the other end of the spectrum here.
Get a life Steve, your bitching and personal attacks on people are low and pathetic. You've had your time, get off the interweb and go chisel some rock; you're better at that than you are at remaining civil and polite on a public web forum.

I agree, This place is not world class, except for the snow, the fishing, the mountain bike trails and hiking. The hard goods are here, the supporting soft goods are not. We do have some very good restaurants. I blame the marketing people for false advertising. We have an awesome ski hill and a great town. It is not a world class resort by any measure. I even remember when "world class" was first used in the print media to describe our ski hill and its facilities. I almost spit my drink onto the mini magazine.
