Hi,

It's my first go at a garden in the Elk Valley, and am looking for advice on the best vegtables (fruits/flowers too)to plant. There are so many choices and my plot is not huge---so any advice will be really appriciated!!!

Thanks. Happy Gardening!

veggies: tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, arugula, chard, kale, lettuce, or basil/giant Italian parsley

Fruits: Strawberry, rasberry (the bush can grow large), rubarb...

and i am unsure of flowers... just see what is in the store that you like... check to see if it is a perennial plant or not (whether you have to plant every year or not)

Check out the Community Eco Garden in Prentice Park. They have work party Wednesdays, are hosting a seed swap at the Community Centre on Earth Day (April 22) and collaboratively offer an abundance of expertise and information - www.ecogarden.ca.

They also write a column in the Fernie Fix beginning this May and running throughout the summer and fall.

We have had good results with zucchini, potatoes, carrots, peas, beans, beets, lettuce, strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes and jalapenos(in pots). We seed most things but usually buy tomatoes, peppers and zucchini. Good luck.

I find that most berries do well as long as the plant is mature enough. as far as herbs go,.. my parsley, taragon, chives and oregano seem to do well and yield quite abundantly in comparisson to other varieties. almost any root vegetable will flourish nicely here, as well as tomatos, peppers, cucumber, squash, peas, onions, lettuces, greens, and cabbage. I've also had some luck with grapes and melons,.. happy gardening!
