"Fernie Alpine Resort is ready to open for the season with the most snowfall in 34yrs!" Wow, I would like to know how they construed the numbers to come up with that statement. According to this data from past 26 years we are just below average and wbelow half of the max for this time of year. http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/rfc/river_forecast/graphs/spd2c09q.html In my 33 years here I know there has been more snow for the start of December. But i guess it will probably fool the tourists into thinking that we got hammered like Whistler. |

easy now, you can market anything......Last weekend was FREE for season pass holders
"earlist start to the season in recent memory".....My first year in town, nopt that long ago, the hill opened on the 25th of NOV.....splitting hairs, but just shows that they'll write anything

LETS SEE WHAT RCR DOES IN APRIL WHEN THE SNOWPACK FAR EXCEEDS THE CURRENT LEVEL. GOOD PT ABOUT MARKETING. IF THE POWERS THAT BE DECIDE TO OPEN THEN CONDITIONS MUST BE PHENOMENAL. JUST PAY THE MONEY, SHUT UP AND SKI. IT IS WHAT IT IS. I LIKE WHAT NATURE OFFERS US. I'M NOT AN AMBASSADOR FOR ANY CORPORATION. IF THEY WANT ME TO SAY NICE THINGS ABOUT THEIR SERVICE, THEIR BUSINESS, THEN THEY CAN PAY ME.

see if you can dig around on the web and find the reports filed for years by craig on the old redtree snow report..i grew up here and have skiied for these supposed 34 years and find this to be possibly the biggest marketing BS yet to come out of the RCR cheerleading staff..anyone remember say '92-'97 some of the biggest years that apparently "never "existed..
trully award winning fiction..perhaps employee drug testing should be mandatory or a literary award for adult fiction !!!
who wrote this dribble..someone who moved here last year?
good lord how much worse can it get?

Well there was that one year where we were all skinning up for deep turns all November(96-97). The reason for not opening was officially Too Much Snow. Cannot remember the opening date, but it was finally opened late Nov or early Dec with 220cm base. I found it- Nov 29 1996. We opened Nov 24th in 1994. Must have been ok because I had had 150 cm of snow fall in my front yard up to that date.

its kind of a disgrace really... we have next to no snow right now, and here they are telling people its the most we have had in 34 years? what are people going to think that have never been here before and see this being the most in "34 years" they are going to think we suck.
Thats why RCR is killing the ski tourism industry here in Fernie. Selling what we don't have and not selling what we do have.
here's a video from 06 that I made on december 1st. Way more snow on the ENTIRE mountain than we have right now - http://www.ourfernie.com/video/dec-1

Nice video Ryland! In the early 90's I'm thinking maybe 92 or 93? We got hit by so much snow in november that they couldn't open the hill! They couldn't make it up with snowcats or snowmobiles because the snow came so fast and deep and had no bottom. They ended up having to wait a week or two for the snowpack to settle.
I guess they got to try to market the same hype as their 'rival world class resort' Whistler has! LOL

i remember that year. I think they only opened the deer chair for skiing. That was hilarious trying to ski chest deep snow on the silver fox!

Update - Headline was supposed to read "Most snow in 3.4 years"
The decimal got missed out.
