New Bounce House Company

I have recently noticed postings on Our Fernie, Kijiji as well as the newspaper that a large bounce house company is coming to Fernie and I am appalled that someone who is coming from out of Province and out of our valley is going to ride off with and make money off of our people. There is already a bounce house company in the Valley who is owned and operated by a mother of 4 who has contributed tremendously and endless volunteer hours toward the betterment of our community. I have known this young woman for several years and she is an inspiration to me. When the talk of recession entered into our Valley, and loggers and miners were being laid off by the 100's she took a stance and lowered her prices to meet the needs of our community; regardless of the little profit she could possibly be making. She has given her services at little to no cost for Fernie's Cancer Walk, the Diabetes Walk and probably several others I don't even know about. I find it very troubling that when we have a local committed individual to making our community a better place, a larger organization takes the benefit and profit by merely relocating to an area and literally stealing the livelihood out of good people such as this person. Competition in inevitable in many areas of business. But we're not talking about a large conglomerate organization or a government funded project. We're talking about our own people here who are losing out and having everything they worked and supported our community for bounced out the window. I have no intentions of supporting the new individuals coming to Fernie. And I hope by doing so, I will preserve a sense of unity within our community. Please note that the company who has worked so hard for our community is The Bouncy Business.

Yeah that's a bummer but what can you do? It's a free market and competition has to be allowed I guess. Whoever does it best or offers the most will win out because obviously this is the kind of thing where two are not needed to meet the demand, or maybe I'm wrong. We'll find out.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a Bounce House Company?

And I have to say I agree in large part with megadude... there's no reason why the local bod should lose out here; if the service provided is superior and there is local support then the outside firm could easily lose out and not gain any ground. Competition is a good thing - it ensures that service providers stay ahead of the game and provide the absolute best. I'd always prefer to shop local and support locals - perhaps the local version can change name or add a tagline to emphasis the local nature and/or do something to garner more support by trading as 'the original' in Fernie?

I wonder if the "competion is good" thought would still be alive if say, WALMART was moving into the neighbourhood?

I get your point. Big competition knocking out small local retailers is never good for communities - particularly when it comes from enormous companies well known for exploiting left, right and centre. Our equivalent in the UK is Tesco which is well known for buying up land and keeping it empty just so other supermarkets can't move in, for buying up all small local chains so that you may have, in one small town, half a dozen supermarkets that are *all* Tesco. We even have the evil Walmart in the shape of Asda here; it's hugely popular among people who don't care about anything other than cost - which, let's face it, is a lot of people these days.

Town planners need to think about the impact on communities before they let huge retailers in... like those ones down the side of the Highway coming in from Sparwood perhaps... trouble is local planners and indeed BC in general seems to put cash, income and profit before the needs of local community and the environment in which they live.

I always check out the local suppliers in town before heading to the big boys only if the local suppliers don't have - and can't get (rare) - what I need. Not everyone is in that kind of position though. Small retailers can't compete on price, they have to offer something above and beyond, and usually can, but people need to be prepared to support them which may cost more.

I have zilcho clue what a Bounce House company is - if it's another one-person player then fair's fair... if it's some huge thing coming in to poo all over a small local operation, then people should just not support it - small local retailers can usually provide MUCH MUCH better service and product knowledge than the big boys.

"Shop Local"!

I'm pretty sure a bounce house is one of those inflatable things you rent out for kids' birthday parties and such, you know, in the shape of a castle or whatever, and you can climb around inside.

I thought a Bounce House may have been slang for a brothel before I read the article, but it turns out that those haven't been franchised yet, and it's a bouncy castle rental co.

There may be a market in combining the two ideas.....
