please say it aint so! rumor has it that the earth being moved around across from home hardware will be the new dump?? can anyone confirm this madness?
IF it is well designed you won't even know it is there. I have seen some that from the outside look like a country club, and all the garbage is contained inside a building. That is a big IF. I have not seen the design for this one.
It's gotta go somewhere....and no matter where it goes, somebody won't like it. It's got to be close to town and easily accessed. There's no easy, pleasant solution. It's like everybody bitching about the oil sands and yet they still want fuel for their cars.
I agree. It has been a thorn in our sides for 15 years. Might be the first thing that Fernie has accomplished in a long long time. And if done right, will create a minimal impact.

My understanding is that the new transfer station will be completely enclosed in a building and all of the material will be stored in bins until transfer. It will have to look better than the existing dump.
The municipal elections are coming up, now is the time to change the direction of our city. Support a candidate you believe in or run for office yourself.

You got it onebladerz. this will be a TRANSFER STATION, not a DUMP. It won't look much worse than the home hardware (probably will look even better!)
It will include a "Free Store" however there is no space allowed in the design for a community compost system. While there isn't any plans in place for this system to be up and running just yet, this is something we absolutely will need in the future.
Everyone should send a quick note to our RDEK Reps (Mike Sosnowski and Mayor Cindy Corrigan) requesting that they allow for space in the design to accommodate a community composting system of some kind.
A community composting program will save costs of transferring waste in the future as we will be able to deal with our own compostables locally instead of paying to ship them to the lethbridge landfill as is currently done.

I got a quick response from Mayor Corrigan after I sent a quick note. She said:
"Hi Ryland, our garbage is going to the Crowsnest Pass not Lethbridge just for clarification. I have been talking to the RDEK about this and we are looking into it. I think there is enough land to do something in the future. Thanks for your interest. Cindy"

This is true, Welcome to Fernie, your first sight... a Transfer Station. (not to mention it is directly against the river.)
