I was wondering if anyone had some environmentally friendly advice for thistles and dandelions? I read some about vinegar or citrus acid, but they said that the tougher weeds will still come back. I read about some other herbacides that are all organic, but can kill your grass. If anyone has a method that works for them, please let me know. Seems like I am forever picking weeds from my lawns and garden the old fashioned way. When nothing else is growing in my garden yet, I had an army of thistles. Is there a local nursery around here, other than Cranbrook? I bought my stuff at Canadian Tire last year, thinking they would only sell flowers that grew in this zone. (My fault for not checking) and now none of last years flowers are going to come back, the roots are dead. So I would love to talk to a local nursery about the plants from this zone, and making the garden look beautiful. Thanks! |

there are a couple of local nurseries. One is on Anderson Rd (head towards the ski hill and take a right just after the Super 8 ) and the other is between Fernie and Hosmer on the right hand side of the highway (if you're heading towards Hosmer). There is also Cincott Nursery located in Hosmer, and the owners run 'The Market' on 7th Ave so you could always stop in there for some advice.
Good luck with your garden!

Regarding the weeds in your lawn, there is a talk tonight by an author who writes about exactly this issue. Click here for more information: http://www.ourfernie.com/get-your-lawn-drugs-carole-rubin. It's at 7pm tonight at the High School.
(The event is also listed as the current featured event on this site's homepage, but whoever posted it forgot to put the location or any contact info.)
You could also contact Dawn Deydey who runs the community garden at a4ll@fernie.com.

Dandelion greens are edible so maybe you could think of them as the first crop of the season? I know that mowing your lawn more often is supposed to help. I tend to let the dandelions stay in the lawn but I dig out the thistle. You need to go down as deep as you can to get all the root out, otherwise bits of broken root will just start new plants.

Let thistle get about knee high. Wait til after a rain or water, then grab some gloves and pull straight up. This gets the whole root and the thistle will not come back. As for dandelions. Leave em they are a beautiful flower.

thistles as bob says or snip and put vinegar down the stem.
for dandelions, pour boiling or close to boiling water over them.
