If you are thinking of heading up the hill for the 22cms of freash......maybe reconsider. Chairs are on the regular hour hold.....& its pouring down with rain to make for quite an uncomfortable wait! Boom broken down for the day and not much open. It almost feels like last week replayed in some areas. This hour delay for chairs opening on powder days is happening more often than not this year and the public seem to be finding it extremly frustrating. after hiking out of the haul back twice, being stuck on the boom for an hour and having to wait on 3 different days for lifts to be open an hour late, I for one am getting a bit frustrated at RCR and the $15 voucher does not make up for missing out on precious powder turns.(all of the above happened in a 10 day period!) If Murry Edwards does not want to run Fernie Alpine Resort properly by upgrading equipment as required or being to scared to open bowels due to liability purposes maybe he should either drastically lower the price in lift tickets or sell the resort to someone who cares about a visitors and locals snow experience. The way he is running the hill now like a dying old ship and is bad for tourism in general. I know by posting this it does not help tourism but maybe rather than just filling out a card to drop in a box people need to bring this in the open.

never before in my 20 plus years skiing here have I seen what appears to be complete lack of preparedness in the mornings.

and to top it all off you see the first tracks crew skiing the bear while they won't allow the public on the lift. why?

why cant they get runs like the bear, north ridge, siberia bowl etc open at 9AM? there aren't any avalanche hazards there...

im guessing that they have all the patrol out doing avi control and then they don't have time to adjust the sign lines in time for a 9 AM opening.

maybe they need some less qualified people flipping signs (and updating the avalanche closure boards!) so the patrol can focus on avi control and mountain safety.

I Agree Ryland.
When you have 50 people standing at the bottom of the bear with the liftie informing everyone that they cannot not go up the lift for their own safety, it seems a bit bizzare to look up and see 15 freash tracks already been laid. It dosent take someone with much intelligence levels to figure out that these people are safe getting freash tracks down the bear because they paid extra on top of the $88 ski pass!!

did you hear the new slogan RCR is using internally.

"We're not happy till your not happy"

at least they can live up to that promise.

Fernie's best kept secret;

Castle Mountain Resort is 99 km away, and they don't close the whole mountain every time it snows 15cm.

But the marketing RCR does is good "Legendary Powder" that's exactly what it is, a legend!

Personally I think there's something to be said for "better safe than sorry", although I am not an expert skier and am quite content skiing the groomers so my comments might not hold too much weight in this discussion.

But when you see the avalanche debris going right into the Lizard Bowl from uncontrolled avalanches I can understand why they are being cautious. And maybe there are less resources this year than previous years in terms of staff.

according to the web site all nine lifts and 113 runs are open the page has said that all year long.....

other hills can have live temperatures, lift status, and run status, and here they cant update the slider boards.

maybe it just the new place I'm living in but seem to me in years past the bombs were going off a lot earlier in the morning

ps: 215$ to ski the rest of the year at castle.......

i'm all for better safe than sorry. and we do have the most extreme avalanche conditions hanging above a resort pretty much anywhere. and most of the time the closures are very very needed and I respect that.

but they always used to be able to open all the lifts at 9AM, even on the highest of avalanche hazard days. except sometimes maybe whitepass, and sometimes timber would have a delay.

their is next to no avalanche terrain in the "triangle" (from bear run to north ridge) and they should be able to let people on the mountain with just that open. Especially if they just finished letting the first tracks club go get it before everyone else.

I also respect public safety. But I get the general impression that people who have been riding the mountain for years are getting frustrated. If you consider how Fernie markets itself...."Legendary powder" they should work extra hard on powder days regarding providing a fair & positive experience for people who pay huge dollars to come and ski the legendary powder. It should not be tarnished by if you have more money then you get to ski more powder.Make the snow reports real and up to date not misleading! Maybe if RCR is not willing to financially commit to improving or replacing old lifts then they should not expect their customers to commit to such high prices (which are not flexible) . If they made the lift and season passes less expensive people may turn a blind eye to hiking 20 minutes out of the haul back or hiking and skating out of the haulback to access certain terrain because the boom is closed. People can also turn a blind eye to no terrian park, drop toliets, and no running water mid mountian because the ski hill is one of the best places to ski in the kootanies. (It is all price reflective) It is a shame to think the residents of Fernie are looking at having to travel 90k to ski some where were they feel that get value for money. We have an amazing ski hill that is hard to beat in terms of diversity, terrain choice and snow quality right on the door step of Fernie, which is a positive factor for the town and Fernie to see it tarnished by poor ownership and management decisions is a huge shame. I hope someone from RCR reads this and trys to make some positive steps to keep the hill as it should be a positive and incredible place to ski in Canada.
