A shoutbox is where you just type a few lines and it appears everywhere... well, on every page perhaps, as a box with the latest shouts in it... it kinda gives real-time chat to a site, without having a chat room.
So, it's like having a general forum that is "real-time live chat" where people just post a line or two at a time. And in clever sites it auto-refreshes the shoutbox too so you don't need to keep checking.
On ourfernie.com the shoutbox could appear over to the left, beneath the big list of menu options, showing the last 10 or so 'shouts'.. or have a little box that's vertically scrollable showing the last 50-100 or so.
But before we put up a shoutbox, do you think there would be any interest in a proper online chat? We can do that just as easily but obviously it would be no fun if nobody wanted to chat... It wouldn't be recorded or searchable like the forums so it might appeal to some people who just wanted to see who's online?
We'll look at doing one or the other by the weekend.
I'm not sure the site needs a Shoutbox either to be honest. It may detract from the forums and the forums here need as much of a push as they can get. Maybe the forums can become more 'chatty' in some places - add a "Just idle chat" forum maybe where things are less geared towards actually discussing anything of merit.

seeing as this site is built on drupal, a shoutbox could be easily installed using this module - http://drupal.org/project/shoutbox

Excellent idea!

Yeah real-time chat sucks. Nobody ever says anything in most online chat rooms and it needs hundreds online simultaneously for even a handful of people to bother posting 'chat'. Nothing worse than a chat room with only 1 person in it. Except perhaps a soggy soufflé, they're pretty bad.
