Considering we had a foot-ish of snow overnight downtown, I was stunned to find that, by about 2pm, practically the whole of the Annex and Downtown - and the Highway - were completely clear of snow. In fact the Highway looked like no snow whatsoever had fallen! There's been a load of work going on around the Annex too to clear extra space at the intersections of the Streets and Avenues. Some people are still parking their cars in the road which means the plough has to make a bit of a weaving path along the Streets but it's still well cleared. Much appreciated! Whoever co-ordinates it all, whoever drives the stuff that does it, big ups to all of you. It's great to see so much of the City of Fernie cleared so quickly after a dump. |

The city boys do a great job. My Big rant is all the dumb asses who don't move their cars for snow removal. Years ago the city had their own tow truck, if you didn't move your car it got impounded. I wish they would start doing that again, at least it wouldn't be like running a gauntlet getting down the street.
I can't believe how many around here won't shovel out a spot for their car or even shovel their walk for that matter, but yet will spend hours shoveling snow to build a kicker to slide off their roof in their yard.
LOL....there's my rant for the day....yes I feel better now

yeah right, great job,
have you tried to drive down 4th lately, or 3rd, i just dont get the priorities, i see the plows and the sanders working late in the airport quite a bit, but 3rd (with all the public school traffic) is like a skating rink, and 4th is about 6 ft wide...
i dont agree with the towing of cars, because some people dont have driveways and have to park on the street, but everybody should do their part in keeping the street clean in front of their own house!

Both the Street and Avenue around my house have been widened this week and it's a lot safer and more negotiable now, but I did actually just now drive down 3rd on my way back from the Post Office. I was quite shocked by how bumpy it is; and yup some of the roads in the Annex here are still very narrow.
However, I think that's the fault of people who park their cars and trucks on the street - I had to do plenty of weaving from one side to the other when driving down 3rd, simply to avoid vehicles parked on the narrow icy bumpy road.. and so what option does the cutting and clearing equipment have but to avoid those streets they can't effectively negotiate? Perhaps by doing so the few who refuse to respect the requests from City of Fernie about which side of the road to park on (there are vehicles on *both* sides in many of the Avenues) will start to realise why the requests are there.
11th Avenue is one I often drive down and until recently that's had a bunch of cars and trucks parked on the road nearly opposite each other and it's little surprise that 11th remains narrow for particular sections.
I'm all for towing the minority to keep good and safe access for the rest of us.. particularly as you say by the School.

I have to say this.....i was driving down the highway and seen the blower, grader and dumptrucks cleaning the side of the highway! Since when did it become the city's responsibility to clean up after mainroads job????? Why are u wasting taxpayers money on someone else's contract?
Also i have read that it is priority #2 to keep the school route clear as possible...so why do us taxpayers have to wait until u clean up mainroads mess and then clear the street for the school????? I seen 2 of the 3 graders working that the city has ....why was the 3rd one parked when 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th is a total mess?????? Why was the grader operator that usually does the annex cleaning up the mess on 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th....how come he wasn't cleaning the annex????? Not to mention the airport!!!!, what a mess that is!!
I think the city needs to put a grader operator who knows what he is doing on the job in the airport!!
The aquatic centre was a HUGE MESS last week!!!! Why was that the last to be dealt with???? MMMM maybe that 3rd grader could have been put to work???? Or would that cost too much after cleaning up mainroads mess?????
What happened to the clean up?????? I see hydrants burried, stop signs burried and snow banks built up around highway access so a person has to nose their smaller vehicle out on to the highway and chance a collision? How come this hasn't been dealt with yet? This is not the fault of the city workers...they take their orders from city hall!!!! Maybe we should flood city hall with calls untill they get the point?????????? I have to say in all the years that i have lived here (25yrs) this year is a total nightmare with snow removal!!!! I do believe that the people that leave their vehicles on the street (don't have the energy to clear a spot for veicles but have time to ski all day!!!!) should have their vehicles TOWED away!!!! Except the people that are trying to keep their spots open that have no driveways!! These workers go out early for a reason.....to try to keep the streets clear for u???? They (city) use to tow the vehicles away regardless and we didn't have near the mess we do today!!!!!
How come the grader hasn't returned to the annex to clear the street from ice build up???? What a nightmare, also why isn't the blower cleaning up the mess on the street between the hospital and the appartments????
I also have to wonder why the city is allowing work to continue on the 901 project without barricading off the streets with heavy machinery????? I do believe a call to WCB should be in order or the bylaw officer to do her job and enforce the parking rules?????)???? HHHmmm where's the bylaw officer?????
