So, they build a new transfer station, no weigh scales, which means no weigh in/ weigh out, which means no commercial/ construction waste, even from small reno's, which means you will have to drive to Sparwood, also, maybe, MAYBE open on Saturdays but not Sundays, which begs the question, why bother spending all of that tax payers money, might just as well of gone to Sparwood in the first place, it will just add another cost to contractors for either a skip or a drive to Sparwood, which in turn just adds another cost to consumers, but who cares? The tax payer tree is always bearing fruit, the beurocrats know, all you have to do is pluck it!!!!

No, totally understandble question, I had emailed our mayor regarding this whole issue, and at first she was not aware of it but has since had meetings with the regional district and confirmed, A- no scales and B- maybe Saturday opening? My queries only started through rumors that were relayed to me from an inside source subsequently they have been confirmed. In my opinion the regional district is a quasi arm of government that has forgotten it is supposed to serve the people not dictate to the people and should be disbanded, however, that is a whole different topic, the transfer station should be there to TRANSFER waste for the tax paying public not as a monument to the regional district.

Here are some facts about the new Fernie Transfer Station. Last Friday, the RD board passed the schedule for the new Transfer Station. It will be open Monday to Saturday, closed Sundays. Director Giuliano and I asked staff to research the cost of opening Sundays, the cost was $55,135 a year. All cost related to Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is shared by all the residents of the Elk Valley. Given that Sparwood and Elkford Transfer Stations are closed on Sundays those Directors, Mayor Halko and Mayor McKerracher were not to keen on having their taxpayers, paying for Fernie to be open Sundays. Nor would my constituents North of Hosmer want to share in this extra cost.
The installation of a weigh scale at the New Fernie Transfer Station was going to be $250,000. Staff wanted to see if it was needed before spending that additional money. It doesn't matter if Commercial Construction waste came to the Fernie Transfer Station it is just a function of money. Currently, all commercial construction waste is supposed to be taken to Sparwood and this has been the case for several years. Businesses would have to pay the same tipping fee as at Sparwood plus whatever our Hauling Contracter would charge to haul the Commercial Construction waste bin to Sparwood. In this way - the General Taxpayer is not paying for disposal of Commercial Construction waste or a scale to weigh it in Fernie. Residential Construction waste from home renos etc. will still be accepted at the new Transfer Station.

We now know that there is going to be a full intersection built for the site and to service the West side of the highway. This will help solve a longstanding hazard zone. If all goes well, it should be completed and paved in August. The cost of this full intersection is shared by the RDEK, MoT and some of the businesses that it will service on the West side.
For those that don't know how the RDEK works. The Region District is made up of Directors who represent Electoral Areas outside of Municipalities, and Directors that represent Municipalities usually the Mayor or a Councilor appointed by a Municipal Council.

The purpose of the RD is so all Local Goverments and their constituents are represented under a common banner on matters that affect all residents such as MSW, Land use issues, Health Care, Education. This collective voice gives us more weight when dealing with senior levels of Provincial and Federal Goverments. It is also a way to minimize duplication of common sevices througout the Region.

There will soon be information on the RD website about the new Fernie Transfer station at www.rdek.bc.ca I hope this helps. If you have more questions you can contact me directly at mike@directorareaa.ca or call the RD office at 250 489 2791.

Would Grass clippings and tree branches be considered construction waste and if not, why are the local landscape companies not allowed to get rid of such material. The clippings and branches are both recyclable, and I am sure that local businesses drop off cardboard to be recycled. Why the bias against local landscapers and some of their recyclables ?

there is a bin for grass clippings and a bin for wood,.... where do u get the idea its not accepted? I'm sure as long as it is a reasonable amount,.. and not a huge stockpile they'd accept it.

As a home owner you are free to drop off your grass clippings and branches, but as a landscaper you are not allowed to do so. Any commercial waste/ construction waste is to go to Sparwood.
