To all the dog owners who allowed their unleashed dogs to approach and attack/aggravate the dog I was walking in the park today, I just want to let you know that as a result of your irresponsible actions I am so fed up that I won't be dogsitting for my friend any more. I just can't face another walk around the park with crazed wild dogs running up to us and lunging, barking and snapping at my friend's dog. I've been looking after this dog for three years whenever my friend goes on holiday and have never seen him make an aggressive move first. Understandably he does defend himself when an unleashed dog attacks him though, something that is happening far too regularly lately thanks to the many uncontrolled unleashed dogs that seem to be roaming the park while their owners let them do whatever they please. For some reason that I don't understand, this seems to prompt the unleashed dog's owner to laugh, hurl abuse at me or act like their dog did nothing wrong. If these "attack" dogs ever got reprimanded or their owners ever apologised I might be able to accept that it was a one-off unexpected incident, but most of the time there's no indication of responsibility at all. My friend's dog will now have to be kennelled for up to 23 hours a day in a commercial kennel simply because you "dog lovers" can't manage to put a leash on your own dog or keep it under control when off leash. |

Many people should not own dogs. They think that just because they are human, they can train a dog. WRONG.

A dog will learn from it's owner. If your dog is out of control it is time to take a long look at yourself.
There is training available so put in the time and the investment.

I don't own a dog, yet I consitently have to shoe them away from my yard... one brown dog with a red collar on visits regularily, and as I was taking out the garbage ran in my back door. Guess what it did in my basement??? Took a huge crap on the floor.
I don't mind dogs, I am actually waiting for mine to finish it's 10 weeks of growing before it comes here. I was looking into the obiendience training here in Fernie, seems like a good choice of places. Any recomendations? the dog is a Bernese Mountain Dog,and I want him to remain a gentle giant.
He will be leashed on walks. No worries. But as for dogs walking around town without leashes, I have never seen this before. Everywhere I lived By-Law is up your butt about leashes with heafty fines and the potential of losing your dog if your a repeat offender. What are the laws here in Fernie? Or are the By-Law too worried about how long the grass is before dogs off leashes?

I have a very large dog and always have her on leash unless on back roads or mountain/bike trails. I don't understand why it is so hard to walk with a dog on leash, especially in parks. What I've begun doing when a dog is off leash approaching my dog and the situation looks aggressive is let my dog go. Trying to hold the leash while other dogs approach her full on is nearly impossible, and usually once they have had the chance to sniff one another out, it's all good. My dog is alpha, so once in a while I hear protests from the dog owner but the rebuttal is an easy, "You're the one with a dog off leash!"
