After top management at RCR publicly stated that there was a war between them and anyone who disagreed with their business practices particularly myself and boasted that they would win it. They have. I have had my skiing privileges revoked for life. With no chance of ever getting them back. Specifically stating my posting here on OurFernie's Open Discussion Forum and on Biglines.com Smack Talk Forum. So today I sit here somewhat lost and wondering where to go next. I really want to ride some chairlifts, but unfortunately I am no longer welcome to ride the ones in my hometown which I have grown up in. Revelstoke? Castle? Red Mountain? Touring? Snowmobile? Congratulations FAR Management. You won the war. I sure do hope your happy. |

You know Ryland even baby birds know that you don't shit in the nest and typical of the posters on this site megadude can't imagine that you have been stupid enough to come right out in the open and agressively attack RCR and expect them to turn a blind eye. megadude reasoned that you as others forward their opinions under assumed names and dare not take ownership of their own opinions. I think that RCR has acted in a completely predictable manner and I can't blame them for not wanting you anywhere near their operations given your actions. Am I wrong or are you involved with business interests in Fernie that might benifit from tourism and RCR is such a big part of that in Fernie

i give up, everything I ever said about RCR was wrong, I was just jealous about how awesome of an operation they run and the great service that they provide to the guests who visit Fernie. The great value for money they provide, excellent dining options, in-resort trail network and the great deals they give to students, seniors, families and all locals.
And I never really liked skiing in the springtime it was too bright and sunny.
Thank god they got rid of jumps, they were so unsafe, I don't know how many times I nearly injured myself skiing along falling star and suddenly realizing I was in a terrain park and flying off a huge kicker.
Good thing they haven't provided staff accommodation or where would people get money to pay for their mortgages if seasonal staff weren't renting our basement suites.
RCR is awesome, they are the best resort company ever and they do so much for our community I should have never complained about anything.
What was I ever thinking, I was being so stupid with my useless rhetoric when all along I should have been singing songs of praise.
I guess you can't really appreciate something fully until its been taken away from you.
What a lesson I have learned.

I believe that Revelstoke is the place to be if you like it raw. But lots of development planned, RCR might buy that too.

Come on Ryland don't give up the fight now, you only lost the battle not the war. You can't just quit and let RCR manage their resorts as they see fit.
You have to keep fighting to get RCR to build housing for their employees. We all know this effects all us locals in a big way. I know I'll sleep better at night once I know there will be accommodation's provided for employees of the resort.
Please keep fighting for more dining options and the long anticipated 'in resort trail network' Personally, I don't go up there to eat or probably will never go up there to utilize the trail network, but I know we'll all feel better knowing it's there anyway.
How bout RCR taking out those jumps in the terrain park? You can't let them get away with making a decision like that. After all the settlement for that lawsuit in the states (which RCR so carefully watched) was only 14 million $$. Only a drop in the bucket for RCR, certainly no justification to do what they did!
That's what I like about you Ryland, you stand up for the little guy and take a big hit for the team. Your purpose is very noble indeed. Please continue your fight, so mere mortals like myself can continue to enjoy life's simple pleasures like shredding the pow on Cedar Ridge (which was almost knee deep this morning).

I for one am glad that "sanook" had the nerve to stand up to RCR. So far it hasn't made a blind bit of difference as he would probably be the first to admit, but if someone (anyone) is willing to put their opinions and their pass on the line the way he is, then it sends a pretty clear message.
As has been pointed out on this site before, RCR are a private company and can do whatever they like. Likewise, there's no such thing as bad publicity. So should RCR need to worry about these opinions? Well, clearly they do, because they have retailiated by banning "sanook" for life. Also sends a pretty clear message.
Steve and Freeheels, I'm glad you are happy with over-inflated price hikes, broken promises, a complete disregard for the community and replacing real options with PR gestures. Personally, I don't think it's too much to expect other people (businesses alike) to have a concience and follow through on commitments they made years ago like housing and resort facilities. But then you're smart people I'm sure, hey, one of you at least has your own business. I'm sure you know better than me about ethics, morals, promises and the absolute lack of any need for anything resembling them within a business community.
I'm glad you don't need restaurants, staff housing and the like, isn't it great to ski all day and then return home to a cosy beer by your own fireside and not need anything else from the resort? But without these facilities for visitors, do you really think they (the visitors) will still come when our pass prices are the same as at other resorts with full facilities? And do you really think RCR will want to keep running our mountain on season passes alone and without the tourism dollars? And when there's no housing left that the lifties can afford and the chairs stop turning? Then where will you go? Maybe sanook will let you go ski with him in Rossland.

Wow, it completely sucks that RCR have taken the step of banning you for life.
For sure, maybe you went overboard now and then with your frustration with the way they run Fernie now after many years of it being a decent place where you grew up and saw it develop. Now it's a "resort", it's over-marketed and over-hyped abroad and a huge number of people get turned off coming back because it doesn't live up to the expectations of the "World Class Resort" that it's portrayed as abroad. I've heard this from plenty of people who come here expecting Fernie to be something it's not. That's not just the fault of RCR or the FAR, but it's damaging the whole community long-term. Fernie needs to be marketed for what it is - not what it isn't.
No employee housing, mid-week passes down to 4 days, major rate hikes, ditching of the seniors and student discounts, shortened season, the Potato Palace created (in a dumb ass location) rather than genuine improvements to the Daylodge, removal of the jumps, we all know the list is endless. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that RCR has a trump card to play that will blow us away because they could do some really cool things to Fernie with their money and investment potential. Perhaps we're all asking for too much too soon.
I know you don't want to be a martyr and, well, RCR have made you one, no doubt. They're a private company, they can do pretty much what they like including ban you for life, but don't give up - surely now you have nothing to lose and, other than those here who diss you and launch personal attacks on your character (hi Steve) there are many who appreciate what you do to raise the issues within the community. It's easy to sit back and take shit. Don't let that flame die out - let it burn brighter now you've nothing more to lose to RCR.
Get a sled. Support the backcountry industry. I'll be your driver! You'll have way more fun that you will straight-lining the on-piste.
Remember - you *are* known as "the R-word", I heard it myself
