Several of my neighbors use herbicides regularly, as so does the City in many public spaces like around City Hall. I'd rather they didn't. What your view?

Environment Minister Barry Penner is asking British Columbians for their input on whether additional restrictions should be placed on the use of pesticides for cosmetic purposes. A pesticide is anything that is intended to prevent, destroy, repel, attract or manage a pest. Pesticides used to kill insects are known as insecticides; those that kill weeds are herbicides; and those that kill rodents are called rodenticides.

An online public consultation is asking British Columbians for their views on a number of issues, including: how to define the cosmetic use of pesticides, when it is appropriate to use pesticides and how to best regulate specific pesticides that have both cosmetic and non-cosmetic uses.

The public consultation will remain open until Feb. 15th. The results will be made public in the spring of 2010, along with information about any next steps to address cosmetic use of pesticides in British Columbia.

You can participate in the consultation by visiting the website

I would rather no chemical pesticides are used. I would also like it if nobody watered their lawns either. Just leave the grass 2". I have not used pesticides or herbicides, fertilized, or watered my lawn for 17 years with no problems. I still have green grass. You also have the luxury of not having to cut the stuff as often. Giving you more free time.

Just for the sake of looking good we destroy by applying herbicide to natural flower (dandelions)that feed important pollinators of many more plants.
I'm talking about the bumble bee, it pollinates your gardens and flowers bed.
This is without mentioning what those herbicides could do to your body, in this time of cancers do we need more chemicals to enhance this plague of our modern times?
I say no to the use of herbicides and insecticides
just for the sake of looking proper.

If dandelions were hard to grow, they would be most welcome on any lawn.

If I didn't water my lawn it would be a brown dead patch. I recognize Buzz's comment as true though because when I lived in west fernie and down in the airport I never had to water my lawn. Not sure why that was but I just mowed it. In the annex my lawn would be dead within the month.

As for pesticides I was under the impression that there were products available now that were more natural. I admit my ignorance on this topic because I don't use them. I do fertilize because again for some reason unless I do my lawn dies. I was told that this was because the people who originally put the lawn in did not use enough top soil. I notice though that it is pretty much the same all through the annex.

I wonder though if the town wouldn't eventually start to complain about dead dry lawns over run with dandelions the same way they do if you don't ever mow? We can't choose a paint color without approval for fear that a visitor might see our town as being full of eye sores. I would suggest that ugly yards would fall into that category.

Just my thoughts.

Dandelions are an invasive species brought by a British nobleman who like them in his salad.

I find it incredible that any one would consider pesticides for cosmetic use. It is problematic enough that they are used in agruculture given todays concerns with agricultural chemicals in our water supplies and the harm they may cause. The thought of risking poisning the water excetra with the use of herbacides and pesticides just to make things look better seems an illogical jump to me. I applaud any land owner who restrains from their use. Learn to grow things without the use of chemicals. Stop wasting time on a manicured lawns.
