City council, all local teachers and parents of this community, Where were you? This weekend the Elk Valley PARTY Program ran a carnival to raise funds to keep this program alive in the Elk Valley. Many people showed up accept volunteers. If our local teachers can not even support a program such as this why should the few work so hard to support a program that obviously is deemed useless by this communities educators and Administrators.
Thanks for those who came out and supported us. To the rest we are in more need of funding than ever before to keep this Program alive. If you can't volunteer then please donate to the Program and keep it alive for your children's well being and their future. Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth.

Don't cross the stupid line! Do you know where yours is?

posting something here on ourfernie stating that volunteers were required (or even just advertising the event) would have been a good place to start.

I have to agree with sanook. If you want people at your event, you need to promote it (just a little). No listing here. No forum topic. No posters around town. The first I heard of it was your post. And that is a little late.

There was a lot going on this weekend. "Build it and they will come" no longer works as a mantra.

Good luck next time.

Through the eyes of a mom with a 6 year old and once being a teenager - I think that the P.A.R.T.Y. program is a WONDERFUL cause to support. For the first time EVER at an event in Fernie I was blown away. The kids loved it and the parents had to just follow their children around.
I was expecting dinky blow up toys and I was happily surprised to see what was there.
Thank you to those that organized this and to those that showed up. I as well am disappointed to learn that the efforts to raise money for such a worthy cause have gone unnoticed by many residents of Fernie.
How are we going to mentor our children if we can't support keeping them alive?

Interesting Jen, as a Mom, found the Carnival a success and adventure found it disappointing. Shows how a single event carries many dimensions and final measures.

I feel the event was great. Too bad it ended up $4000 in the black.

As far as the volunteers it was the people that said they would show up who did not that realy burns my hide.

We did the best we could and we are quite pleased at the comments of how the kids thought it was great.

Oh ya to the person that stole one of the silent auction prizes. Thanks you are a real winner.

Any time you hold an event and it ends up in the black, you ought to be thankful. $4000 toward the PARTY should not be scoffed at.

If you look at Fernie this weekend, we really stepped out for the good of people. The Carnival and the sold-out Freya opening of Sex and the City really pumped up our contributions to local causes.

and the Fernie Mountain Bike Club's Spring Bike Blitz got some great support. Although we never made anything near $4000 we were still quite happy!

after reading the article in the Free Press it sounds to me like the "fun"draiser was perhaps a bit lavish? spending $6000 and expecting to make that back and then some is a bit pie in the sky for an event in Fernie.

PARTY program was looking for a way to raise money to try and support our program without having to ask for donations. We didn't want to take a project on that another group was doing. This carnival was an idea that we thought would work. We tried and sadly, failed.
This event was placed in the newspaper, it was on community events on the Drive radio, there were posters at Overwaitea, local businesses, Dr's offices, dentists offices, in the high school and elementary schools (Fernie, Spwd and Elkford) and their newsletters.
We had to make this event big in the hopes of attracting more people. Plus, when you book these big games, you have to book more to save money since they come from Clgy. Unfortunately there was a monster truck rally in Cranbrook, along with other events around. There never seems to be a free weekend this time of the year and to complicate things, the arena only has a small window open when the ice is gone.
If anyone has any ideas on how to raise money.....please let us know. Our regulations state we cannot do Bingo's, raffles, or accept money from the lottery/liqour or tabacco industries because of "addictions".
The kids that did come out to support us had a great time. Except the person who stole the $65 red "commit" hoodie from our silent acution.
Thanks to my friends and family who stepped in to help us out during the night at the last minute. And especially Doreen and Mike for putting in long hours to make this happen.
