The first weekend of June in Fernie has become an unofficial start to the summer over past years, featuring the first two (of many!) popular outdoor events that happen in our warmer months. Saturday, June 6th is the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life, followed by the Fernie Fun Run on Sunday, June 7th.
The CCS Relay For Life encompasses the entire Elk Valley and 2009 is the 8th annual event for our communities. In the Elk Valley the event occurs during the day, from 11am-11pm. Starting with a heartwarming Survivor's lap, the day has a packed schedule of fun and entertainment for everyone. Teams of up to 12 friends, co-workers or family members will walk the track for 12 hours at Fernie Secondary School to raise funds for prevention, advocacy, research, information and support in the fight against cancer. Last year saw over $100'000 raised at this one day event and every year the total continues to grow!
There's still time to participate, volunteer or donate- for more information please visit www.cancer.ca/relay (then select: British Columbia/Yukon and then: Elk Valley from the drop down lists) or contact event co-ordinator Melissa Fleischacker on 250 423 3503 or at elkvalleyrelay@bc.cancer.ca.
Don't take off your running shoes yet! June 7th is the 26th Annual Fernie Fun Run, organized by Fernie Sports. This 5k/10k event takes in local Fernie trails and is a great opportunity to blow away those winter cobwebs and gear up for the summer! All proceeds to charity.
Registration is $25.00 for adults (includes t-shirt) or $10.00 without t-shirt.
Registration for children is $15.00 including the t-shirt or $2.00 without t-shirt.
For more information or to register please contact Karen at Fernie Sports on 250 423 3611 or at karen@ferniesports.ca
So whether you participate, volunteer, donate or just drop by to support these great events and cheer on the walkers & runners, don't miss the start to the Fab Fernie Summer!
