Sold Out, but coming back soon...

Last night's Indie Films Fernie presentation of "Into the Wild" was a runaway sell out. IFF presentations saw increasing numbers over the previous season, showing to a full house at the Vogue Cinema on most nights.

Sean Penn's production of Jon Krakauer's novel of the same name about the life and demise of 23 year old graduate turned wanderer Chris MacCandless was bound to recieve attention in a mountain town like Fernie, but to be virtually sold out by 6.30pm certainly took even the organisers by surprise.

The film itself was, well, I won't spoil it. Due to the enormous response and large number of dissapointed moviegoers who had to be turned away, Sean at the Vogue Theatre has generously agreed to bring "Into the Wild" back for a second showing. The date is yet to be decided, keep an eye on this site and on www.ferniemovies.com for the announcement.

In the meantime, to ensure you don't miss the next four screenings in the Winter IFF schedule, contact Oz at the Arts station to purchase season passes or advance tickets on 423 4842 or info@theartsstation.com. See the ourFernie events calendar for details of future screenings on the second Monday of each month, February to April.

I wasn't surprised this sold out so soon really - I didn't know much about the movie until the day before it was due to hit Fernie, but once I'd read about it and watched the trailers I was sure it would be a huge hit, particularly in Fernie and particularly at this time of year. I'd thought the whole of Fernie would show up wanting to see it and I'm so pleased that Sean has decided to bring it back.

I was lucky enough to get in on the night (I was ready to line up from an hour before doors opened!) and I found the movie truly astounding. I've read much online since - both for and against what Chris McCandless did - but the film is truly awesome whatever your views on the kid.

The acting is out of this world, as is the cinematography. I hope this goes on to win Oscars, it is such a moving film and so brilliantly done.

Thanks to the IFF for showing it, it is one of the most amazing films I've seen in recent years and I'd recommend it to everyone - in fact I've been emailing all my buddies telling them to see it just as soon as they can.

Anyone in Calgary, it's on at the Plaza Theatre in Kensington this week only. The DVD is coming out mid-February. I've already pre-ordered!
