The Fernie Branch of the Nelson Car Share Co-op was launched on March 25 and is already a popular service within the community. Several new members have already joined the initial 6 and with just a few more members we will be able to look at bringing a truck to the branch.
Many people have expressed an interest in joining the Co-op but can't commit just yet. One way you can help us is by carrying one of our Husky-Mohawk dividend cards. There is no cost or obligation to you, just put one of these cards in your wallet and whenever you make a purchase at a Husky-Mohawk, swipe your card and the co-op will receive 2c for every dollar spent. ABOUT THE CAR SHARE CO-OP:
The Nelson Car Share Co-op (a non-profit organisation) has been running for over 8 years and now has over 130 members in 6 communities in the Kootenays using 15 vehicles. Members pay a fully refundable deposit to join, then a low monthly fee, adjusted to their use of the vehicles. (As little as $4.16/month for under 100km) plus an hourly fee and a per km fee while they are using the vehicle.
A 2 hour grocery trip around town with 10km of driving would cost just $6.80, while a day trip to Cranbrook would cost around $55. (Not including monthly fee or taxes.) ALL other costs are included, from insurance and tyres to the gas! If you fill up while you have the car, you will be re-imbursed on your monthly account- the gas costs are included in the per km fees.
The Fernie car (a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire) is conveniently parked in the IGS parking lot, on the corner of 3rd Ave and 4th Street. As we grow and add more vehicles we would hopefully be able to spread the vehicles across town for easy accessibility for everyone.
Members can use any of the vehicles in any of the Kootenay communities, and even have access to vehicles in Vancouver and Victoria. Our guaranteed alternative transportation policy means that even if the car is booked, you can use the next best option (taxi/bus/hire car) and the co-op will re-imburse any additional costs over the cost of using the co-op car.
