For the second time this year, Wildsight is encouraging local citizens to attend a presentation by carnivore expert Dr. John Weaver of the Wildlife Conservation Society Canada. Dr. Weaver will be giving a presentation on a recent report he co-authored: Carnivores of the Southern Rockies - Core Areas and Connectivity Across the Crowsnest Highway on Tuesday, March 25th at 7:30pm at the Fernie Campus of the College of the Rockies. Admission is free.
Wildsight says this is an incredible opportunity for citizens to further inform themselves about the threat posed by industrial impact to the region’s wildlife.
“Dr. Weaver’s discussion at the College of the Rockies in Cranbrook in January was really enlightening,” says Wildsight Program Manager Casey Brennan. “I have no doubt he’ll shed some light on what’s happening here in this area.”
Wildsight states that the timing of Dr. Weaver’s presentation is particularly relevant due to the recent coalbed methane extraction proposal by BP Canada Energy Company in the region.
Dr. Weaver is widely recognized as one of the world’s foremost carnivore specialists having worked in the Rocky Mountains for over 35 years. He co-authored a recent report Carnivores of the Southern Rockies: Core Areas and Connectivity Across the Crowsnest Highway details the challenges of maintaining connectivity across Highway 3 and outlines long-term conservation plans for the region’s lynx, wolverine, grizzly, wolf, and badger populations.
